Painter Michael Jones may only know a few basic guitar chords, but his passion for stringed instruments—guitars, violins, mandolins—resonates far beyond his musical abilities. This passion takes center stage in his March exhibit, “Still Life with a Guitar,” opening at the Tulsa Artists’ Coalition (TAC) on Friday, March 7th, from 6 to 9 p.m.

Jones has explored the world through an abstract Cubist lens for over a decade, and a stringed instrument graces every canvas in this collection. Many Tulsans will recognize Jones from his 40-year career as an art educator, first in the Union school system and later at NSUBA and Rogers State University. Now, five years into his full-time painting career, Jones’s prolific output fills his studio with finished works and rolls of completed canvases.
His Cubist approach invites viewers to trace the lines and shapes of familiar objects—houses, chairs, flowers, wine bottles, and, of course, guitars—reassembled to reveal movement and rhythm. “My process,” Jones explains, “is to break down the shapes of everyday objects into single shapes and to reassemble them in a way that shows movement and rhythm.” He works primarily with red, blue, and yellow, mixing a spectrum of subdued shades (though he admits to the occasional “lazy” dab of premixed brown). The exhibit features mostly 24"x24" canvases, with one larger 40"x90" piece.

TAC is thrilled to showcase this artist. “Still Life with a Guitar” will be on display until March 29th. Don’t miss this opportunity to rediscover the beauty of the familiar through Jones’s unique abstract vision.
