TAC Member Highlight: From Studio Kid to Realist Painter — Jeffrey Mobley’s Artistic Journey

Writer: TAC GalleryTAC Gallery

Artist Jeffrey Mobley

There’s a throughline of creativity connecting Jeffrey Mobley’s entire life. “There has never been a time that my life has not revolved around creating art,” he explained. Growing up in his father’s commercial art studio, surrounded by artists, paints, and the hum of creation, shaped his path from the very beginning. It was a childhood immersed in the artistic process, from sketching and painting to photography and the burgeoning world of computer art. “It’s amazing really...that I experienced this and learned the processes for creating from start to finish. I feel very fortunate.”

That early exposure laid the groundwork for a successful career as a freelance graphic designer and product photographer. But a new chapter began during the pandemic. Looking for a creative outlet during the shutdown, Mobley picked up a brush and discovered a passion for painting. Now, his time is split between design work and painting, with a hopeful eye toward a future focused solely on painting.

So, how does a lifetime of artistic experience translate onto the canvas? Jeffrey’s creative process is a constant flow of ideas. Whether it’s a client project or a personal painting, the approach is similar: brainstorming to refine a concept, followed by thumbnail sketches or quick photos to explore composition and color. His background in product photography, with its focus on set design and props, seamlessly transitions into the world of still life painting.

Currently, acrylics on wood or masonite panels are his preferred medium, though a recent foray into canvas has opened up exciting possibilities for larger works. Jeffrey’s style is rooted in realism, a lifelong fascination. “My art is clearly representational,” he explains, “but I do enjoy developing a narrative or maybe something unexpected. I want the viewer to enjoy that and find a little humor in my work.”

Inspiration is everywhere – nature, music, nostalgia, even sayings and clichés. A running list of ideas and notes serves as a wellspring for new projects. Motivation, while generally strong, can sometimes be challenged by the demands of work and life. The key, Jeffrey believes, is consistency: “I do try to paint every day, even if just a little, to keep a connection to the work.”

For aspiring artists, the advice is simple: “Visit as many museums and galleries as you can, read about anything and draw.” And, perhaps most importantly, “Let your work be a reflection of you. Put your personality in your work.”

Tulsa born and bred, Mobley’s connection to the local art scene is strong. His work can be found at M. A. Doran Gallery, and he’ll be participating in the Mayfest Invitational Gallery and the TAC 5x5 show. His involvement with the Tulsa Artists’ Coalition (TAC) began with casual visits to First Friday art crawls and 5x5 shows, evolving into a membership once he started painting. “I really appreciate that Tulsa artists have the TAC for the opportunities it provides and support it gives to members,” he shares.
