Art didn’t just become a career for Gina; it became her lifeline, a way to navigate a challenging period of her life and reconnect with her true self. Finding Light in the Dark:

Gina’s path to art began during a time of significant personal struggle. Feeling lost and adrift as an immigrant, lacking familiar support systems, she found solace in the act of creation. “Art found me during one of the darkest chapters of my life,” she shares. “I was lost—mentally drained, living in a difficult situation, spiritually adrift, and struggling as an immigrant without the language, friends, family, degrees, or a clear path forward.” In this challenging period, picking up a paintbrush became more than just a hobby; it was an escape, a way to process her experiences and discover a hidden talent. This act of creation ignited a spark, revealing a path she hadn’t previously considered.

Before this pivotal moment, Gina had explored various career paths, searching for a sense of fulfillment. Graduating high school at just 15, she spent years seeking her true calling. However, it was through art that everything finally clicked. “I fell in love not just with the act of creation but with the process itself,” she explains. Art became the key to unlocking her authentic self, a journey of self-discovery and healing.

A Colombian Tapestry Woven into Art:

Gina’s Colombian heritage plays a crucial role in shaping her artistic vision. Growing up surrounded by the vibrant colors and lush landscapes of Colombia instilled in her a deep appreciation for beauty. This connection to nature and her cultural roots are woven into the very fabric of her work. “My Colombian roots profoundly shape everything I paint,” she says. “The vivid colors, the energy of nature, and the textures I grew up with are all part of my creative language.”

This influence manifests in a boldness of color and form, creating a visual language that speaks of her upbringing. Whether she’s depicting animals, women, or creating abstract pieces, her work acts as a bridge, connecting nature with humanity, the tangible with the spiritual. It’s a visual representation of her journey, a blend of her past and present. The spiritual symbolism of animals and the emotional depth she portrays in her depictions of women further reflect her personal experiences and cultural background.

Process and Experimentation:

Gina’s creative process is a dynamic interplay of intuition, planning, and experimentation. It often begins with a feeling or an idea inspired by nature, spirituality, or moments of quiet reflection. She gathers visual inspiration and organizes her thoughts digitally before diving into the physical act of creation.

Her approach is organic and fluid. She often starts loosely, playing with colors and allowing the piece to unfold naturally, making adjustments along the way. Experimentation is a cornerstone of her practice. She embraces the unexpected, mixing mediums like oils over textured acrylics or combining inks and watercolors. “Sometimes, I intentionally break the rules to see what happens,” she admits. These “mistakes” often lead to unexpected discoveries, adding depth and intrigue to her work.

Gina’s choice of materials also contributes to the richness of her art. She primarily works on stretched canvas or wood boards for larger pieces, allowing her to build layers and textures. For smaller works, she explores diverse surfaces like fabric, acrylic, or glass, further expanding her creative possibilities.

Style in Evolution:

Gina’s artistic toolkit includes a variety of mediums—oils, acrylics, inks, and watercolors—which she often blends to create unique effects. While she appreciates the versatility of acrylics and the delicate nature of watercolors and inks, oils hold a special place in her heart. “If I had to choose a favorite, oils would be it,” she says. “The depth, richness, and softness they offer are unmatched.”

Her artistic style resides in the space between abstract and realism. She skillfully blends recognizable subjects—animals, women, natural elements—with abstract forms, colors, and textures, creating a dreamlike quality that is both grounded and open to interpretation. This blend allows her work to resonate on both a visual and emotional level.

Over time, Gina’s style has evolved, gaining a sense of balance and intention. She has grown more confident in creating moments of stillness within her pieces, allowing them to communicate emotions rather than simply presenting a visual image.

Staying Inspired and Giving Back:

Inspiration, for Gina, is found everywhere—in nature, animals, personal experiences, and even in quiet moments of introspection. Maintaining motivation involves a daily commitment to her craft, even when inspiration is elusive. When she faces creative blocks, she takes a step back, goes for a walk, or indulges in her love for horror movies. Experimenting with new materials also helps to reignite her creative spark.

Gina also emphasizes the importance of social connections in fueling her creativity. Engaging with other artists and the wider community provides her with renewed energy and a sense of belonging.

Beyond her personal artistic practice, Gina is passionate about sharing her knowledge and inspiring others. She offers private art classes, in both English and Spanish, in various mediums, including watercolor, acrylics, oils, and mixed media. Teaching has become an incredibly rewarding aspect of her artistic journey. Witnessing her students’ discoveries and excitement for creation reinforces her own love for art and pushes her to remain curious and open in her own work.

A Vibrant Future:

Gina is currently working on a new series that delves into the intricate connections between nature, women, and emotions. She is also embarking on her first full abstract collection, an exciting new direction for her artistic exploration.

Gina is passionate about using her creative talents to make a positive impact. Every sale of her artwork helps her to contribute to organizations, events, and initiatives that uplift communities, such as fundraisers and animal welfare donations. For those seeking something truly unique, she accepts commissions on a variety of surfaces, bringing clients’ personal visions to life. Committed to making art accessible to everyone, she offers a range of gifts at various price points. Her work can be found locally at Tails and Ales and Cricket and Fig in Tulsa, providing her with valuable opportunities to connect with the community and share her art.

Gina’s journey, from a period of darkness to a vibrant life filled with creativity, is a powerful reminder of the transformative power of art. Her Colombian heritage, her experimental approach, and her dedication to sharing her passion through teaching have all contributed to her unique artistic voice. As she continues to explore new themes and mediums, Gina Alusi’s art promises to continue inspiring and captivating audiences for years to come.
