Her artistry extends beyond paint to include handmade papers, fibers, and mono prints, creating a fusion of colors and forms that captivate the senses.
Collage artist Jean Griffin’s concern for the environment inspired her show “What Will Grow?” Griffin asks the question with her artwork “What will grow when our tampering with the natural process of all living specimens is not natural?”
“Plants and seeds can’t grow in already dead soils, pollinators are dying off, people are growing less empathetic, more greedy...what will be the outcome of this type of growth?” Griffin asks through her collages. Rendered with a mix of watercolor and acrylic paint and found materials such as old newspapers, Griffin’s collages have a fantastical feel to them with naturalistic shapes such as pods, vessels, and cells.
Griffin said the collages of plants and growing cycles she creates as a mixed medium artist are not yet of this world, although they are beautiful and offer a glimmer of hope. She considers her collages a gentle reminder that the more we tamper with nature, the faster nature will seek its own path to survival, without regard for us.
“They were here long before us, and will remain after us. We would be wise to drop our chemicals and follow their lead,” the artist said.
