Kinetic artist Jordan Vinyard is intrigued by the alchemizing effects of technology on humanity. Her exhibit, “Command + C, Command + C, Command + C” consists of kinetic sculptures, multi-media installations and video/performance that intentionally create physical gaps for viewers. From empty benches to installed reactionary sensors, machines appear to pathetically wait for humanity to return.
Vinyard is an associate professor of art at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma located in Chickasha. She has traveled internationally with her work including exhibiting in Narva, Estonia, Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and South Korea.
“I’m particularly excited about TAC because of the industrial aesthetics and exposed vents. I very intentionally try to find spaces that have that quality because it dramatically emphasizes the mechanical nature of the work,” Vinyard said. Pieces in the exhibit have exposed electronics, wires, microcontrollers, and sensors that are integral to the works.
Vinyard said the exhibit is about reestablishing the virtue of the physical body. ”I believe technology can be utilized to re-humanize by prompting an audience to begin asking not, ‘What is that thing doing?’ but rather, ‘What am I doing that makes that thing do what it’s doing?’” Vinyard, a native of Mustang, also directs the Art Wrecker Gallery in Chickasha.
