I like the personal, the intimate and the emotional charge of color, unexpected pairings and to treat the representational with elements of abstraction.
Originally working with stone lithography and etching, I moved to large, detailed, realistic drawings in graphite and also watercolor and colored pencil, but painting in acrylic and oil requires drawing without a hard, pointed object. My styles are split between pure abstraction and realistic still life or whimsical representational imagery, often involving word play which makes the title an integral element. Sometimes, I let the worlds collide. An awareness of art history introduces a pantheon of artists for inspiration. B.F.A., Studio Art, Alma College. M.A., History of Art, Michigan State University.
