Ever played the game called “telephone,” where a phrase whispered from one person to the next gets mangled?
“Language is a virus” means that words can communicate but also harm and infect.
In this era of bullying, bilious oppression of cultures, identities and life choices, language has become weaponized. Do we roll over, saying “Orwell was right?” or can we find joyfully humane ways to combat the prevailing lunacy?
Through poetry, movement and music, Language Is a Virus will conduct a painless colonoscopy on American culture to see how we may be infected. Chaos and audience interaction will help us laugh just when we need it.
This is the ninth in a series of explorations by TAC member Michael Wright of making theatre in a nontheatrical environment, where the art is in the interaction of the audience as much as in the performances.
