Celestial Waters
Tessa Richardson
This exhibition presents new ceramic works by Tessa Richardson, a contemporary artist whose practice bridges material experimentation with expansive conceptual inquiry. Drawing on her Anglo-Indian heritage and a multidisciplinary background spanning conceptual art, video installation, and ceramics, Richardson creates forms that move fluidly between the intimate and the infinite.
Rooted in clay yet oriented toward the cosmos, the work explores the origins of life and humanity’s place within a vast, interconnected universe. Each vessel and sculptural form exists along a continuum—at once microcosmic and celestial—evoking stardust, molecules, primordial seas, and emerging bodies. Through wheel throwing, hand-building, and experimental surface treatments, Richardson emphasizes texture and rhythm, echoing natural patterns that repeat across scales of existence.
The exhibition invites viewers to consider life as an ongoing transformation of matter: from water to organism, from elemental particles to consciousness. Celestial references and organic forms suggest a shared ancestry that binds all living things, reminding us that the human story is inseparable from the ancient forces that shaped the universe itself. Grounded in material presence yet expansive in scope, Richardson’s work offers a meditation on becoming, continuity, and our cosmic origins.
