“Mapscapes” is an exhibition of collages created from artifacts collected during Candacee White's travels to over 80 countries. Each piece incorporates a variety of materials, including Hindi, Arabic and Burmese newspapers, gold leaf from a Belgian junk market, old maps, color swatches from local garage sales, origami paper from Japan and Hanji paper from Korea. Ink and pencil are used to fill in the empty space, allowing imagination to fill in the gaps in memory.

White explores the idea of space and place through collage, representing landscapes, cityscapes, and maps, mashed together and invented from experience, memory and a longing to explore somewhere new, over and over again. The exhibit aims to invite viewers to observe intricate details and notice small things within the lines and textures, evoking the sensation of exploring distant places and providing a visual journey through the diverse physical and psychological materials that make up geography and experience. “Mapscapes” encourages viewers to see the beauty in collected scraps and how they can represent the essence of different cultures and places.
